This route is a treat for those looking for a real Scottish experience.

We only have to drive an hour from Edinburgh and we already find ourselves at the gates of the Highlands. Meanwhile, sights pop up along the way, such as Linlithgow Palace, the Kelpies, a work of art depicting two huge horse heads, the castle at Stirling or the tower erected in memory of William Wallace.

We first stretch our legs at Doune’s 12th-century castle. As we walk around the fort, history certainly unfolds before us. If we are curious, we can find the castle in some films, as it has served as a filming location on several occasions (e.g. Outlander, Monty Python).

In Kilmahog, a few miles from Doune, we stop for a short time to recharge before continuing our journey. Highland cows often graze here and entertain visitors with their unique appearance.

For the rest of the tour we visit one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Scotland, the Falls of Falloch. The all-encompassing water spray and the pounding noise as the water rushes down the rocks provide a unique experience for anyone willing to visit this hidden beauty.

Passing through Scotland’s first national park, Loch Lomond, the distinctive landscape unfolds before us, which usually greets you on postcards. Winding burns, gloomy mountain peaks, mysterious lakes and historic ruins alternate everywhere.

One of these is the 15th-century Kilchurn Castle, which has served as a fortress, a comfortable residence and a garrison throughout history. Upon arrival, we will provide a short photo opportunity as this is one of the most photographed castles in the country.

From here, we don’t have to drive much to get to the 18th-century town of Inveraray, where we can walk around the palace and its colourful garden, still inhabited by the Duke and his family, and then top it all with a pleasant lunch in a local restaurant.

After that, we turn east towards Edinburgh, but there are still many attractions along the way back. For a brief photo shoot, we will stop at both Butter Bridge and Rest and Be Thankful Pass before reaching the shores of Loch Lomond once again. From here, there is a direct route back to the capital, where we close our day around 7 in the afternoon.

Ancient Legends. Incredible Stories. Magical Landscapes.
