Scotland is full of attractions and exciting secrets to discover. During our two-day trip, many of these will be visited and during this time you can taste the unmistakable Scottish experiences.
Departing from Edinburgh, we reach the gates of the Highlands within an hour and immediately immerse ourselves in the discoveries with a visit to a castle. Built in the 13th century, Doune’s fortress has hosted many historical figures throughout its eventful history. The castle promises to be a particularly exciting visit for film fans, as it was used as a filming location by Game of Thrones and the Outlander series, among others.
After a haunted castle, what could be more refreshing than a whiskey distillery visit with a tasting. Glengoyne, often referred to as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, gives a glimpse into the manufacturing process and then, as a closure, we rinse the newly acquired knowledge with the ‘Water of Life’.
For the rest of our journey, bypassing Loch Lomond from the south, we cross the National Park named after the lake, showing the varied face of the classic Scottish landscape. We will spend our lunch time in the 18th-century town of Inveraray, where you will have the opportunity to spend a pleasant lunch in one of the restaurants serving local delicacies, as well as to visit the imposing Inveraray Castle.
After the refreshment, we continue on our way to the heart of the Highlands. After a photo stop at the mysterious 15th-century Kilchurn Castle, we take an hour’s drive to the deservedly famous Glencoe Valley, where you are guaranteed to be captivated by the sight of rugged mountain peaks.
In the late afternoon we reach the town of Fort William, which will be the location of our accommodation. The free evening hours provide an excellent opportunity to explore the city.
On the second day of our trip, after breakfast at the accommodation, we will visit one of the north-western corners of the country to admire one of the most famous castles, the Eilean-Donan. Situated in a picturesque setting at the meeting point of three lakes, the building exudes a truly unique atmosphere.
After visiting the castle, we hop in the car to head to the long-awaited Loch Ness. Our search for Nessi will be aided by a lovely boat trip on the lake. Once filled with experiences, we reach the northernmost point of our route, Inverness, which will serve as our lunch spot of our day.
After a pleasant break, we get up to visit one of the most important sites in Scottish history. The Battlefield of Culloden, which was the greatest of the Scottish independence battles, still preserves the importance of the Scottish aspirations for independence, so visiting brings the visitor closer to the feelings of the locals.
Turning south, we head for the capital, but there are still many places along the way that deserve a word. As a rest, we stop in the charming Victorian town of Pitlochry to soak up the tranquility the place radiates.
From here, a straight road leads to the end of our journey, ending our adventure in the evening in Edinburgh.
